July 8th. Johannesburg
Sorry no photos today. Quite the flying day. Had to go back up to Nairobi. Flight delayed by 2.5 hrs. Met a very nice family. We couldn't understand their language. I finally asked what language are you speaking? He said Afrikaan. I'm like what is that? He said when the Dutch developed a colony on the coast of Cape Town sort of as a stop over before going around Cape Hope which is quite dangerous in the 1700's the Dutch had concessions for food water nautical supplies and things like that for the Portuguese and others getting to Johannesburg. As the colony grew and became permanent all these languages melded together with African Dutch and others coming together. It is spoken and taught in the schools today. Swahili isn't as prominent as it was in the Sub Sahara. You do hear Zulu now, so hard to understand. English is still the number one language. It sure makes easy traveling. On our way to our place our Uber driver who speaks Zulu saw a road block/diversion. He said oh no I thinks it's the police doing checks. Here is where the police ask for money. So we were asked to pull over and Wilson rolled down his window with his blonde head popping out. Low a behold the police just moved us through. The Uber driver got the biggest kick out of that. He said they don't touch you if you have a westerner in your car. He just continued to chuckle. We heard there are rolling blackouts often. As we were driving down the hwy all the lights on the entire stretch just went out. The driver said oh that's normal happens all the time everywhere everyday. We are like ok. So we get to our place. We are staying on the 13 floor. Cool view BTW. I said Wilson what if we are in the elevator and the power goes out? Still trying to figure that one out😬😬🤭. Hoping it doesn't happen
